An urban retail center, Southgate Market occupies an entire city block in Chicago’s South Loop. The design responds to its site with a glass-walled entrance pavilion and circulation for pedestrians, cars, and delivery vehicles. The structure includes 320,000 square feet of retail space, a 2.5-level rooftop parking garage with 900 spaces, and a ground-level parking garage for 300 cars.
Southgate is constructed from post-tensioned reinforced concrete with 30 x 40 foot bays, all built on 270 caissons drilled up to 60 feet deep. Reinforced ground-faced concrete masonry covers the building’s skin, and a curtain wall of patterned glass welcomes visitors at street level.
