Located on the Plaza at Upper Illinois Street at the Optima Signature building in Chicago, the Kiwi sculpture was designed by David Hovey of Optima. The 15-foot tall sculpture is composed of ½-inch plates. Through detailed finite element modeling of the entire sculpture, CSA engineers were able to identify “hot-spots” where large stresses build up in narrow portions of the plates, and suggest unobtrusive adjustments to stiffen those areas. CSA also determined welding requirements throughout the many complex plate intersections plus connections at the base of the sculpture to resist the wind overturning forces.
