This project includes a 300,000 square foot patient tower to replace an existing hospital building. This new West Pavilion includes 96 patient rooms with baths, a comprehensive Women’s Center for Life and Health, a pharmacy and laboratory, an energy-efficient central plant, a gift shop, kitchen, and cafeteria.
The foundation consists of belled caissons extending approximately 45 feet below grade, while a 9-story superstructure uses conventionally reinforced concrete slabs. A lateral system of two shearwall cores encloses the building’s elevators and vertical systems. The new central plant structure, bridges and walkways are constructed of composite steel decks, supported by steel beams and girders. Because bridges and walkways connect to the new building at various floor elevations, structural steel framing was the most cost-effective method of construction.
