Hyatt Place and Hyatt Summerfield Suites

Dania Beach, FLorida

This complex of two extended-stay Hyatt hotels used reinforced CMU bearing walls with precast plank floors to efficiently blend the structural needs with the architectural layout. Clad with brick, the exterior CMU bearing walls had many window and door openings, posing a unique challenge in designing for South Florida’s oceanfront hurricane wind loading. The foundations consisted of spread and strip footings on relatively weak soil. To strengthen the foundation, we recommended the use of stone columns and dynamic compaction.
