The Music Center at Depaul University is the first phase of a new magnificent facility for their School of Music. The concrete building is a four-story structure with several two- and three-story performance spaces within. Setbacks in the building meet the required Concert Hall height and connect the building to surrounding residences. The new complex redefines the eastern edge of DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus.
At the center is the 535-seat concert hall, enveloped by 18-inch thick, 70-foot tall concrete walls, which support eight-foot long cantilevered concrete slabs along the side wall seating and a 150-seat cantilevered balcony at the rear of the hall. Various structural transfers were required at the ground level to create the lower-level parking facility under the entire building footprint.
