Located in downtown Chicago’s theatre district, 215 West Washington is a residential development of spacious apartments. The foundation consists of belled caissons, extending approximately 80 feet below grade. The parking levels consist of post-tensioned, one-way slabs supported on post-tensioned girders at 22 feet on center, while the residential levels consist of 8-inch conventionally reinforced slabs. For the lateral system, concrete shearwalls surround the elevators and stairs.
Beginning at the 16th floor, residential levels extend one additional bay to the east. To support the structural overhang, we used exposed steel trusses along the east elevation, extending from the 14th to 16th floors, supporting the columns above. These trusses tie back to the shearwalls for stability and load transfer.
